An Original 1940 Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Cech Panen Kutnohorskych (released in the U.S. in 1940 as "The Merry Wives"), the 1938 Otakar Vavra Czechoslovakian historical melodrama ("An adventure in ecstasy"; set in Czechoslovakia at the end of the 16th century; about a town where the minerals used for money are mined, and that attracts people looking to make money dishonestly, and when an honest man is condemned to death, a dishonest nobleman offers to help him, but his offer comes with strings attached) starring Zdenek Stepanek, Frantisek Kreuzmann, Adina Mandlova (billed as "Introducing Adina Mandlova"), Antonie Nedosinska, and Ladislav Pesek. Note that this movie was released in Czechoslovakia in 1938, and it was a serious melodrama dealing with moral issues. Someone in the U.S. named Edgar E. Lloyd viewed the movie and saw potential in distributing in the U.S. in a very misleading way, and he renamed it "The Merry Wives", gave it a very misleading tagline "An adventure in ecstasy", and added a sexy image of Adina Mandolova, who was third billed in the Czech release, and played it in a subtitled version in the U.S. (and we suspect that viewers were not happy with being misled!). If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a 1964 re-release Czech poster, and NO other movie paper items, from any release of this movie in any country until we received this one-sheet! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small paper loss at the top two crossfolds. It was folded in half an extra time and it had some small tears and tiny paper loss on parts of some folds, and some pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
