3f0295 DR. SOCRATES pressbook 1935 Paul Muni as gang doctor, MacLane, William Dieterle, ultra rare!

An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 11" x 17" [28 x 43 cm]; 20 pages) (Learn More)

Doctor Socrates, the 1935 William Dieterle medical doctor crime thriller ("With the deadliest weapons known to science he fought a thousand killers!"; about a prominent doctor who is forced to help gangsters, and they try to make him their regular physician, but he injects them with a drug that makes them temporarily blind!) starring Paul Muni (in the title role as "Dr. Socrates"), Ann Dvorak, Barton MacLane, Robert Barrat, John Eldredge, Hobart Cavanaugh, and Helen Lowell. Note that Warner Bros. remade this movie just four years later as "King of the Underworld", with Kay Francis playing a female doctor, and surprisingly, there was very little difference between the two movies, even though the lead was now a female! Also, this pairing of Paul Muni and director William Dieterle would prove incredibly successful, because they would go on to make The Story of Louis Pasteur, Juarez, and The Life of Emile Zola together, some of Muni's most successful films!

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this pressbook!

Note that in December 2021, we were consigned a truly remarkable collection of pressbooks (the first 37 were auctioned in our December Major Auction, and the most expensive one sold for $17,500!). In our regular auctions since, we have auctioned hundreds more from this collection. Now we approach the END of this collection of these ultra rare pressbooks, which is absolutely the finest collection of pressbooks we have ever been consigned. In this set of auctions, most of the ones we are auctioning are ones that have "cuts" (ads cut out), although we are also auctioning some uncut ones, mostly ones in much lesser condition (see each pressbook's condition to know which are which). THIS IS ONE OF THE PRESSBOOKS THAT HAS ONE OR MORE CUTS, BUT IT IS EXTREMELY RARE, AND AN UNCUT EXAMPLE MAY NOT EXIST! Some of these were folded at one time, but they were stored unfolded for many years, so we left them unfolded, and unless the new owner requests otherwise, we will send them unfolded, because re-folding them would likely lessen the condition. Many of these are ones we have either never auctioned before or only once auctioned before, sometimes many years ago. These were collected decades ago, which was the only time that many of these could be found, and after these auctions are over it may be years (or decades!) before some of these are offered again. They ARE that rare! Note that pressbooks from the 1930s are almost never found in great condition, and some of them (especially those printed during World War II, including all the MGM ones from that time) are printed on newsprint, and are hard to find in even lesser condition. We have several images from each pressbook. We have given each an overall grade, noted how many cuts it has, but beyond that, we ask that you look at our images to get a good sense of the condition of that pressbook, because, since they have many pages, it would take forever to describe their condition in detail.

Condition: good, WITH CUTS. One of the interior pages has a 4" x 5" cut, and the cover has some faint staining around the edges. Otherwise, the pressbook is in pretty good condition.
