The secret of Manderley... challenging, mysterious... broods over a powerful drama of two lonely people who lived on courage and hope!"; "Produced by David O. Selznick who made 'Gone With the Wind'"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; about a young woman who marries a rich and powerful widower after a short romance, and she feels she is in constant competition with her husband's dead wife, or is she?) starring Laurence Olivier (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; "Hero of Wuthering Heights"), Joan Fontaine (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; "in her sensational starring debut"), George Sanders, Judith Anderson (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Gladys Cooper, Nigel Bruce, Reginald Denny, C. Aubrey Smith, and Florence Bates NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that the commonly accepted release date for this classic Alfred Hitchcock movie is 1940, but this original one-sheet carries a 1939 copyright date. It is not uncommon for posters to be dated in the year prior, especially if they were released at the start of the year. Condition: good to very good. The poster had small tears and tiny areas of paper loss on the top half of the vertical foldline and in the bottom 1/4 of the vertical foldline. Someone put much clear tape on the reverse of this foldline in those areas. There were also some creases, smudges, and tears around the edges of the poster. There were holes at each crossfold and there was a hole in the "V" of "OLIVIER". There were two holes 4" to the right of the top crossfold (both in Fontaine's hair, with one touching the edge of Olivier's cheek). There were some areas of paper loss in the left of the top foldline in the green background area. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was really well backed. The restoration of the above areas was very expertly done. Staring at the poster from inches away, you can see where there was restoration, but from any distance away, the poster looks great, and it definitely does NOT have that "dipped in paint" look so typical of the work of many restorers. While it is far from an excellent example of this poster, I would think most collectors would be happy to display this rare poster on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
