An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked English Double Crown Stage Play Poster (DC; measures 20" x 30" [51 x 76 cm]) (Learn More)

The Forty Thieves, the 1900s English stage play production. Note that this poster features cool artwork of an Arabian female (possibly a female Ali Baba?), and is similar to 1930s English stage play posters we have sold which are also based on classic tales. Those posters were used for local Christmas pantomimes (that were very professional productions) that were held all over England for many years. In those pantomimes, it was common for women to play boys' roles, and for men to play the roles of unlikable women (like witches and mean old ladies!). Therefore, it seems quite possible that this poster is from a much earlier pantomime, but also with a woman playing the lead role. If anyone knows more about this play or this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info:

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was folded across the middle only and it had a few tears near the middle of that fold and in the left of the fold. There were some tears around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, but it is lightly rippled down the right edge (almost entirely in the excess linen only).
