A Bound Volume of 30 Original Vintage German Newspapers (measures 13" x 18" [33 x 46 cm]; 624 pages) (Learn More)

Olympia Zeitung literally translates to Olympia Newspaper was the official German newspaper of the Summer Olympics in Berlin in 1936 and was published by Reichssportverlag The newspaper was published daily in four languages from July 21st to August 19th. Initially the length was set at 16 pages but it increased to 24 pages during the games. The complete run was 30 issues, with a total of 624 numbered pages. When they published this, they knew there would be an issue for every day, so they numbered the pages consecutively, so the first issue has pages 1 through 16, the second has pages 17 through 32, etc, all the way through 624! Since this was published throughout the Olympics, it covers all of the events and all of the results, and is very heavily illustrated throughout. It is entirely in German, so we couldn't easily read the articles, but one thing that jumped out is that (contrary to legend) black African American Jesse Owens received great coverage for his amazing achievements (legend had it that Hitler was outraged by a black American beating German white Aryans, and ordered the media to not cover those events well, but clearly, this bound volume disproves that). Aside from lots of images of Owens winning his events, there is an article with a cartoon that is titled "Owens on Nurmi's Trail", indicating that they recognized that Owens had the potential to be another Paavo Nurmi, the legendary "Flying Finn" who had won nine gold medals and three other medals in the three Olympics preceding this one. We don't know that the information or images in these 624 pages has been seen much, if at all, since 1936, and certainly, it seems that this bound volume deserves to be in a museum, whether of sports, history, or political history, or any museum!
Important Added Info: Note: We have 33 images of this hardcover bound volume of newspapers, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 33 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 23.

Condition: very good to fine. The 30 issues were clearly bound together immediately after the Olympics, and have been undisturbed ever since, as the entire volume is in excellent condition (with the exception of a few faint brown stains around the edges and a few other very minor defects). See our many images to get a good sense of the overall condition of this bound volume.
