Date Sold 12/4/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) The Asphalt Jungle, the classic 1950 John Huston (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) crime film noir ("MGM presents the story of the city under the city."; "From a novel by W.R. Burnett"; about a "perfect robbery" with a team of top professionals, but of course, everything unravels, partially through double-crosses; perhaps the best movie of its kind!) starring Sterling Hayden, Louis Calhern, Jean Hagen, James Whitmore, Sam Jaffe (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), John McIntire, Marilyn Monroe, Marc Lawrence, Barry Kelley, Anthony Caruso, Teresa Celli, Brad Dexter, Don Haggerty, and Daniel Clarke NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this window card! Also note that Marilyn Monroe was a virtual unknown when this classic film noir movie was first released in 1950, and did not even receive billing on any of the posters. The primary ad campaign for this movie was a text only poster, with the words "THE ASPHALT JUNGLE", with the tagline "THE CITY UNDER THE CITY", written in a cool font and design (the one-sheet has no image whatsoever). Yet, the poster designers recognized the value of having a sexy woman's image in some of the advertising (we know she appears on the six-sheet, the window card, and the title card, but we don't think she appears at all on any of the other posters). In 1954, the movie received a full-scale re-release, and MGM billed Marilyn Monroe as though she was a major star of the movie! Note that the window card was folded across the center at one time. Because the foldline is not exactly across the center of the card, we don't want to re-fold the window card prior to mailing, because it would not fit in one of our standard mailers, and we believe that re-folding the window card would lessen its condition (we never roll window cards into a tube). If you specifically request it, we will re-fold this window card, but you will not be able to return it. Condition: fair. The card was roughly folded near the center, which caused creases and surface paper loss along that fold. There are also many stains around the edges, with a few scattered through the image, including on Monroe and Calhern. Obviously, this rare and desirable card can be restored, but bear its significant defects in mind and the cost of restoration. Learn More about condition grades
