(Learn More) The Lone Ranger Rides Again, the 1939 William Witney & John English masked hero cowboy western serial sequel ("Hi-yo, Silver!"; "New Action - New Thrills - New Mystery"; "A Republic Serial in 15 Whirlwind Chapters"; "Based on the Radio Serial, 'The Lone Ranger' by Fran Striker") starring Robert Livingston (in the title role as The Lone Ranger), Chief Thundercloud (billed as "Chief Thunder-Cloud"; as Tonto), Silver Chief (the Lone Ranger's horse!), Duncan Renaldo, Rex Lease, J. Farrell MacDonald, and Jinx Falkenburg. Note that this was a sequel to the 1938 serial, "The Lone Ranger", but while Chief Thundercloud returned as Tonto, Robert Livingston took over from Lee Powell as The Lone Ranger. If it looks familiar to you, it is because there was a near-exact reproduction of it made by Jack Mathis, the author of Valley of the Cliffhangers. However, that reproduction was on different paper stock, and has some other differences as well. THE PRESSBOOK OFFERED HERE IS THE INCREDIBLY RARE FIRST RELEASE 1939 PRESSBOOK! BUT THERE IS SOMETHING THAT MAKES IT EXTRA SPECIAL! When Republic Pictures created this pressbook, it was made like other serial pressbooks of the time, with 16 pages on a quality paper stock, and with the posters on the back cover, and the lobby cards on the inside back cover. But because The Lone Ranger was such a famous comic character, they also issued a special 22-page supplement with all the tie-in publicity that had been arranged for this serial! When you look at the supplement, it looks like they simply put the same cover from the regular pressbook on it, but this is not true, for two reasons. For one, the cover of the supplement has the title in a different color and the rest or the cover has different coloring from the regular cover. But in addition, the regular cover is connected to the regular back cover, which has the posters, while the supplement cover is connected to a different page, which has what is printed on the first interior page in the regular pressbook printed on the inside back cover of the supplement. To make it even more confusing, they wanted the supplement to be stapled at the top and lifted open from the bottom, so they simply stapled the inside back cover to the top of the rest of the supplement. This may sound confusing, but once you see the images, or the actual pressbook and supplement, you will see that they are two very different things, which just share very similar covers. But not only have we not auctioned the pressbook before, but we have also never auctioned the supplement, and the winning bidder will get both these items! Note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Note: We have 11 images of the pressbooks in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 11 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 1. Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. The regular pressbook has tears and paper loss around the edges of the cover, and paper tape in the top of the back cover, which affects the words on both sides of the back cover, but not any images. There are tape repairs down the spine of the cover. The interior pages are in much better condition than the covers. The supplement is in "very good to fine" condition with very minor wear. So we are giving these two items an overall grade of "good to very good", because one is "fair to good" and the other is "very good to fine". Learn More about condition grades
