DEEDS GOES TO TOWN candid deluxe 8.25x10 still 1936 Gary Cooper & director Frank Capra! Date Sold 6/10/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, the classic 1936 Frank Capra (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) romantic inheritance comedy ("A new laugh-and-love team takes America by storm!"; "Rocking America with laughter!"; "Story by Clarence Budington Kelland"; "Screen play by Robert Riskin"; "Another great Frank Capra Production"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a small town "rube" from Mandrake Falls, Vermont, who inherits millions of dollars, and he goes to New York City to claim it, and everyone tries to swindle him out of the money, and a female reporter poses as his girlfriend to write stories about him, and he tries to give all the money away in loans to poor farmers who were hurt by the Great Depression, and he is given a sanity hearing, and he refuses to speak because of his girlfriend's deception, but it all works out quite nicely in the end!) starring Gary Cooper (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Longfellow Deeds), Jean Arthur (as Babe Bennett), George Bancroft, Lionel Stander, Douglass Dumbrille, H.B. Warner, Margaret McWade, Margaret Seddon, Emma Dunn, Walter Catlett, and Margarete Matzenauer. This movie was re-made in 2002 (as "Mr. Deeds") by Adam Sandler, with himself in the starring role. Also note that the plot of this movie is very similar to Times Square Lady, which came out the previous year, but with the sex of the heroes reversed (and the source stories for the two were written by different people). Interestingly, this movie was originally titled "Opera Hat", and it seems that it centered on the part of the story where Cooper becomes the head of the New York Opera House, and while that subplot was retained, the plot was greatly expanded! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: What a wonderful still this is! It is from one of Frank Capra's best movies, and it was taken on set by Irving Lippman. The snipe on the back explains that Capra was about to film a scene with Cooper and Jean Arthur, and that Gary Cooper was standing next to Capra silently waiting for instructions on how to act the scene, and that the smoking Frank Capra was "asking himself how he would react if he were in the audience watching the scene about to be shot"! Note that this is one of ten wonderful Gary Cooper stills from the late 1920s and early 1930s that we were consigned, and are auctioning in ten separate auctions. Each comes from the same collection that contained the twenty rare Gary Cooper stills from the same time period that we auctioned in February 2021, and those were truly wonderful stills, and three of them auctioned for over $1,000 each, and the current ten stills include some equally wonderful ones! These stills were purchased by celebrity Johnny Crawford many years ago, when he purchased an incredible collection of stills that also included great early Laurel and Hardy stills (and we also have eight of those in eight separate auctions). Mr. Crawford first came to fame as the son in the TV series "The Rifleman" and later became a band leader loved movies, and early on he collected many stills and lobby cards. These ten rare early Gary Cooper stills were consigned to us from his collection! Also note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock. Finally, note that the movie is called "Opera Hat" on the back of this still, which was the working title for this movie! Condition: very good. There are three tiny "bumps" in the left blank border, but otherwise, the still is in pretty nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
