An Original Vintage Glass Slide (measures 3 1/4" x 4" [8 x 10 cm]) (Learn More) Please Do Not Expectorate on the Floor, the circa 1920s local theater glass slide ("Remember the Johnstown flood."). This was a "helpful instruction" glass slide that was shown along with coming attraction glass slides between movies at a 1920s movie theater (we have seen these in movie scenes showing old time theaters, but it is likely that very few of these survive). Note the tagline referencing the Johnstown Flood. This was a legendary flood in Pennsylvania in 1889, which became an idiom for flooding afterwards. There were subsequent floods in Johnstown, including one in 1924, which may well be why this slide references it (as it might have been a current event). And of course, the tagline means that if all the tobacco chewers were to spit on the floor, the theater would become flooded! Important Added Info: Note that glass slides were designed to be put in a special projector that would project the image onto a movie screen (they use exactly the same concept as 35mm slides). This slide is the kind that has two panes of glass that are taped together with black tape around all four edges (front and back), typical of many older glass slides. We have provided a high quality scan of the image, but we have not taken a photo of the slide, because there would really be very little to see! Condition: very good to fine.
