An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27 1/4" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) No Way Out, the 1950 Joseph L. Mankiewicz race relations crime film noir ("Is it a question... Or an answer"; "an entertainment with a great courageous theme reaching to new heights of screen dynamics with seven new conceptions of dramatic portrayal"; "Don't miss it!"; "All colored cast"; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck and Written by Joseph L. Mankiewicz & Lesser Samuels) starring Richard Widmark, Linda Darnell, Stephen McNally, Sidney Poitier (in his first major film), Mildred Joanne Smith (in her only movie appearance, as Poitier's wife), Harry Bellaver, Stanley Ridges, Dots Johnson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Francine Everett, Frederick O'Neal, and Davis Roberts NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Paul Rand Important Added Info: Note we have only previously auctioned this poster twice (in 2014, a linenbacked example in lesser condition, which sold for $1,911, and an unbacked example in 2008, which sold for $2,255)! The poster offered here is the exact same poster we auctioned in 2008, so it remains the only unbacked example we have auctioned, and one of only two we have been consigned. Note that this is a much admired poster with a really unusual design by Paul Rand was dramatically different from other posters of its time, and the person in charge of the ad campaign obviously wanted to make it extremely special, because they hired Paul Rand to do the one-sheet and 24-sheet, and they also hired Erik Nitsche to do several posters, and Saul Bass did the insert! Having these three great artists designing the posters has caused much confusion as to "who did what" over the years, but there has never been any doubt on this one-sheet, because Rand's name is printed under the image! One unifying image from the advertising campaign is the provocative handcuffs/bed image (first suggested by Bass) which he, Rand and Nitsche all used in their designs. Note that all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I of eMoviePoster.com's December Major Auction were consigned to us by legendary French dealer/collector Dominique Besson. Dominique Besson started collecting movie posters in 1981, and became a dealer in French and European posters in 1994, and has remained as a top dealer ever since! But in addition, 30 years ago, Dominique began collecting U.S. one-sheets, first those with Saul Bass art, and then adding Alfred Hitchcock posters, then Humphrey Bogart, and he finally ended up collecting in an amazing total of 47 different categories, purchasing the posters from all over the world! Now the time has come to sell this wonderful collection, and Dominique has chosen eMoviePoster.com to do so, through our auctions! As noted above, all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I come from this more remarkable collection (the 28 that do not were consigned to us by other collectors, and are clearly marked). This is not all of the Dominique Besson collection we are auctioning. In addition, there are approximately 200 more folded one-sheets that will be in Part IV of this special auction (ones from the 1970s to present), and there are approximately 100 unfolded one-sheets that will be in Part III (including many great ones). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase folded one-sheets (all of which have had no professional restoration) from one of the greatest one-sheet collections assembled! Note that this one-sheet is from the category that Dominique Besson collected on that he labeled "1950s". Condition: very good. The poster had tiny separation at the middle crossfold and tiny surface paper loss at the bottom crossfold. It had 2" of separation and tiny paper loss at the top crossfold and someone put clear tape on the back of that area and put slight black marker on the front of it. There are small tears in the right half of the top and bottom vertical fold and a few small tears in the borders. The poster could absolutely be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or one could choose to have the above pretty minor defects corrected through linenbacking. Either way, the new owner will have a great poster to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
