New York World (also known as "New York Sunday World" and "The Sunday World" for the Sunday edition, and "Christmas World" near the Christmas holiday) was a newspaper published in New York City from 1860 until 1931. The paper played a major role in the history of American newspapers, and was a leading national voice of the Democratic Party. From 1883 to 1911 under publisher Joseph Pulitzer (of Pulitzer Prize fame), it became a pioneer in "yellow journalism" (a type of journalism that presents little or no legitimate well-researched news, and it had fallen into disrepute by the 1950s, and was solely used by tabloid newspapers, but has had a major resurgence with the influence of the Internet over the spread of news), capturing readers' attention and pushing its daily circulation to the one-million mark. Many of the top illustrators of the late 1800s worked for this newspaper, including Richard Outcault, who created "The Yellow Kid", one of the first "comic book" stars!
Artist: F. Gilbert Edge
Important Added Info: Note that this poster was created to advertise the specific issue of this newspaper noted in our title. It would have been displayed publicly to encourage people to buy the latest issue.
