An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 33 1/2") (Learn More) Stagecoach, the classic 1939 John Ford (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) cowboy western ("A powerful story of 9 strange people"; "Excitement That Rises To A Fever Pitch - and never lets you go!"; "A Strange Frontier Incident of 1885"; "2 Women on a desperate journey with 7 Strange Men"; "Nine oddly assorted strangers start out by stagecoach for Lordsburg, New Mexico. Each has his own personal reasons for wanting to get there. Then strange things begin to happen. The telegraph is mysteriously cut... the way station burned to the ground. Danger grows steadily more menacing... until... as convention breaks down, the lives of the travelers are tangled together... you live with them this strange adventure... tense, full of action... deeply moving..."; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a stagecoach that is carrying a group of people across the plains through Apache territory and personal differences) starring Claire Trevor (as Dallas, the "marked" woman), John Wayne (as The Ringo Kid), Andy Devine (as a babbling driver), John Carradine (as a gambling "gentleman"), Thomas Mitchell (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as a drunk doctor), Louise Platt (as a pregnant upper class lady), George Bancroft (as a sheriff), Donald Meek (as a whiskey salesman), Berton Churchill, Tim Holt, and Tom Tyler (in a small but key role). Note that John Wayne had received the starring role in "The Big Trail" in 1930, and it had done poorly, and his starring days seemed to be over! In the mid-1930s, he successfully starred in a series of low budget B-westerns, but was not considered for major productions. But in 1939, when Gary Cooper turned down the lead in "Stagecoach", John Ford took a chance on John Wayne, but the studio thought so little of him that he wasn't pictured on the one-sheet or most of the advertising! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this Belgian poster measures 23 3/4" x 33 1/2". Also note that this is a very rare "pre-World War II" Belgian poster (before World War II, Belgian posters measures this size, and after World War II they measured roughly 14" x 22"). This poster is from 1939, right from when the movie was first released (not only is the poster dated "27 Nov. 1939", but Wayne is given second billing to Claire Trevor). Also note that this poster has a headshot image of Wayne (along with the other stars) unlike the original U.S. one-sheet, which does not picture Wayne at all! Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and the restorer did a good job, but you can see signs of the restoration from inches away (since most people look at posters framed on a wall from at least a few feet away, we don't feel this is a defect, but we feel it should be noted). See below for this poster's pre-restoration condition (we are the only major auction company we know of that shares this information with our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). very good. There were two slightly diagonal creases to the left of the middle crossfold that extend into Trevor's hair and forehead (they are truly faint). There were extra creases across the center fold and there was slight paper loss down the vertical foldline. There were pinholes in the corners. There was a couple of faint scuff lines in the solid blue background area. Other than the above basically minor defects, the poster was in excellent condition prior to backing. The person who backed it did next-to-no restoration, but fortunately the poster did not need it. Of course, if the new owner of the poster wanted to make it look "perfect", it would be an easy matter for a restorer to do additional touch up to the poster's slight defects.
