A Framed Original Vintage Linenbacked German World War I Poster (measures 23" x 34" [58 x 86 cm]) (Learn More) Ludendorff-Spende Fur Kriegsbeschadigte (literally translates to "Ludendorff Donation for War Invalids"), the 1918 German World War I (WWI) Home Front charity poster encouraging people to donate to disabled soldiers, and featuring Ludwig Hohlwein artwork of a German soldier with a crutch, holding a pair of pliers and a hammer. Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Ludendorff was a German general who was victorious at Liege and the Battle of Tannenberg during World War I (WWI). In 1916, he was promoted to Quartermaster General and together with Paul von Hindenburg, became the chief power behind the management of Germany's military efforts until his resignation in 1918. The fund was set up in May of 1918 by Emma Tscheuschner to assist war-disabled soldiers help transition back to civilian life. The fund collected around 150,000,000 Reichsmarks and continued until 1923. Erich Ludendorff was the Honorary Chairman of the fund. Ludwig Hohlwein was a German artist from the 1890s until his passing in 1949. He is one of the best known German poster artists (though his reputation suffered because of his work with the Nazis)! Initially an architect student who illustrated for newspapers, he went on to design book decorations, booklets, and advertising posters. He joined the Nazi Regime in 1933 after refusing an offer to emigrate to the United States, and created government program posters as well as advertisements for the 1936 Munich Olympics. Poster historian Alain Weill says "Hohlwein was the most prolific and brilliant German posterist of the 20th century. Beginning with his first efforts, Hohlwein found his style with disconcerting facility. It would vary little for the next forty years. The drawing was perfect from the start, nothing seemed alien to him, and in any case, nothing posed a problem for him. His figures are full of touches of color and a play of light and shade that brings them out of their background and gives them substance". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Ludwig Hohlwein Important Added Info: Note that this is a very rare poster from Germany from before World War II with great art by Ludwig Hohlwein. We previously auctioned a smaller 11x17 version of this poster, but we have NEVER auctioned this 23x34 version! Apparently, this poster was used at a "garden concert", "combined with singing lectures", because that information has been overprinted in the top left and there is other information overprinted in the top right and below the above information. We would think that this concert was an event to raise money for the war effort. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Our consignor had this poster in a frame, and he sent it to us that way. The winning bidder can have the poster shipped together with its frame in a very large flat package, or if they don't want the frame, we will ship the poster by itself (that will be the choice of the high bidder). We have provided an image of the poster in and out of the frame. There are very few German movie posters from before World War II in existence (because of the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II), and most of those few are in museums. Note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 23" x 34" [58 x 86 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was folded down the middle a second time near to the first fold, and it has some small tears and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the folds. It had some creases, smudges, and scuffs scattered in the image and some tears in the upper left border, with one extending to the "K" of "KONZERT". It had a water stain in the top right corner. There are some smudges and scuffs scattered in the image, more so in the solid black areas. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was mounted onto a thin linen, perhaps soon after it was created, with no excess at the top and bottom, and 1" of excess at the left and right. As noted above, our consignor had this poster framed very nicely, and the winning bidder can have the frame shipped to them, and it can be re-framed and enjoyed exactly as it is, or one might choose to have additional restoration performed, either with or without re-backing the poster. Whatever the new owner decides to do, they will have an incredibly striking and extremely rare poster that we hope they display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
