An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 20" x 26" [51 x 66 cm]) (Learn More)

Diplomaniacs, the 1933 William A. Seiter political screwball comedy ("A tuneful sexpedition of hysterical importance") starring Bert Wheeler, Robert Woolsey (Wheeler & Woolsey), Marjorie White, Phyllis Barry, Edgar Kennedy, Louis Calhern, Hugh Herbert, Richard Carle, and Jack Leonard (as the man in the gorilla suit). Note that Jack Leonard was one of the first men to play gorillas in movies. He was an extra in Tarzan the Ape Man, and the director did not like the way the men in ape suits were performing, and Jack Leonard said he could do better, and he was given the part! He and his wife made his gorilla suit and he studied real life gorillas to see how they moved and the sounds they made. He appeared in a dozen movies between 1932 and 1940, nine times of them as an ape! We don't know what happened to him after that (perhaps he passed away). If anyone knows more about Jack Leonard, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that Ray 'Crash' Corrigan and Charles Gemora were two actors who played lots of gorillas in movies in the 1930s and 1940s. Emil Van Horn and Jack Leonard each played around a dozen gorillas, and interestingly, that was all they did (no doubt all four of them owned a gorilla suit!).

Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 20" x 26" [51 x 66 cm]. Note that this poster comes from a collection that was consigned to us of window cards, inserts, and half-sheets, ALL of which are in MUCH lesser condition (as is immediately evident from looking at the images of these posters). But many of these posters are from early 1930s titles where it is next-to-impossible to find a better condition example of these posters! Obviously, the cost of restoration of these posters will vary greatly depending on the extent of the defects, so please carefully study our super-sized image of each item BEFORE you place a bid. Also, know that normally we allow returns of any item, but because all of these items are in MUCH lesser condition, we will NOT accept returns of this item, so bear that in mind as well before placing a bid.

Condition: fair. The borders were all trimmed off and there are a few nail holes scattered throughout the poster. There is staining and discoloration in the teeth of the face at lower left. The poster is quite fragile.
