eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 3y1462 PHANTOM 8x10 still 1943 great image of Tom Tyler in costume with native guys, rare serial! Date Sold 3/14/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) The Phantom, the 1943 B. Reeves Eason World War II (WWII) Nazis-in-Africa fantasy superhero serial ("The Amazing Phantom comes to thrilling life on the screen!"; based on the famous newspaper cartoon strip) starring Tom Tyler (in the title role as The Phantom/Godfrey Prescott), Jeanne Bates, Kenneth MacDonald, Frank Shannon, Ernie Adams, and Ace the Wonder Dog ("as 'Devil'"). Note that this serial stayed fairly faithful to the classic comic strip, with Tom Tyler's father being The Phantom and him taking over the hero's role when his father is killed, just as in the comic strip, where there was a long line of Phantoms going back many, many years, where each son assumed the identity of his father, so that the naive natives thought it was a single immortal man! Tyler had starred two years earlier in "The Adventures of Captain Marvel", so he was no stranger to the genre, and he was a cowboy star for many years, and he was physically suited for the demanding role of The Phantom! Being that this was 1943, naturally, The Phantom fought the Nazis, in Africa! Also note that Ace the Wonder Dog had his first role in 1938's "Blind Alibi" (playing a seeing eye dog). He appeared in 15 movies stretching over 8 years. If anyone knows more about Ace the Wonder Dog, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned three one-sheets, four lobby cards, and a pressbook from this movie, and NO other movie paper, until we received this still (which is the very first still we have ever seen from this serial). HOWEVER, IT IS POSSIBLE THIS STILL IS NOT FROM THE 1943 FIRST RELEASE. WE CAN'T SAY FOR CERTAIN, BUT IT DOES HAVE SOME AGE AND DOES HAS A TAPE STAIN ON THE BACK OF THE TOP BORDER. We also don't know that this movie was ever re-released to theaters. However, it is possible that this is some kind of dealer created re-strike or reproduction. As we said, we have never auctioned any other still from this movie, so please do not bid on this unless you can accept the uncertainty as to whether it is from 1943 or if it was created later (perhaps in the 1960s). Condition: very good. Learn More about condition grades
