eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result BIG BRAIN 1sh '33 Lease from Hershenson/Allen ArchiveAn Original Vintage One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh) (Learn More) The Big Brain, the 1933 George Archainbaud romantic Wall Street stock swindler melodrama (about a small town barber who discovers he has a talent for stock manipulation, and he rapidly builds a financial empire, but he starts to cheat his investors, and beautiful investor Fay Wray is the one who brings down his house of cards; loosely based on the real-life story of master pyramid scheme developer Charles Ponzi, but the movie also owes a strong debt to the 1931 Edward G. Robinson movie, "Smart Money") starring Phillips Holmes, George E Stone, Fay Wray, Minna Gombell, Lilian Bond, and Reginald Owen. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", retitled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
