A 1950 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 26 1/2" x 40") (Learn More) The Outlaw: The Story of Billy the Kid, the classic 1946 Howard Hughes biographical cowboy western romantic melodrama ("Trigger-fast action!"; "Sensation too startling to describe!"; "The last time Howard Hughes said he had someone to show you, he gave you two new stars... Jean Harlow and Paul Muni. Now he makes the same promise again and presents Jane Russell and Jack Buetel"; "At Last.. now you can see Howard Hughes' daring production The Outlaw"; produced by Howard Hughes) starring Jack Buetel (as Billy the Kid; "The Outlaw!"), Jane Russell (in her first big screen role!; "introducing Jane Russell"; "Mean.. Moody.. Magnificent"; "The woman who made him notorious!"), Thomas Mitchell (as Pat Garrett), Walter Huston (as Doc Holliday), Mimi Aguglia, and Joe Sawyer. The movie was almost released in 1941, but it was held up for five years due to censorship problems (there are posters and lobby cards from the aborted 1941 release, but they are extremely rare). Howard Hawks began this film as the director, but soon quit the project due to Hughes' constant interference. Hughes also designed the Cantilever bra for this film to better "show off" Russell's chest (who wouldn't wear it!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: R.W. Important Added Info: Note that this is a poster from the second release of this movie. Why does it say "after a 3 year delay"? Because after the movie was finally released by RKO in 1946, there were major protests over its overt sexuality, and RKO cut short its release. Three years later, it was given a major re-release (some sources say 1949, but most say 1950, but it was likely three years after it was pulled from the theaters in late 1946 or early 1947). Note that this one-sheet has been trimmed and it now measures 26 1/2" x 40". Also note that this poster has been paperbacked, but not in the restoration sense. Someone took the poster and mounted it onto a thin paper backing, and did no restoration (likely they were just trying to protect the poster from further deterioration). Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thin paper backing, it can be sent rolled (however, it will be rolled with the image outward, because paperbacked posters should always be rolled that way, while linen posters are always rolled with the image inward). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. A small amount was trimmed from the blank borders. There was a circular stain in the top left corner and paper loss in the bottom left corner. There was fine surface paper loss on the foldlines with paper loss at the top crossfold. There were diagonal scuff marks near the center of the poster and a few creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Someone took the poster and mounted it onto a thin paper backing, and did no restoration (likely they were just trying to protect the poster from further deterioration).
