An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Swedish Movie Poster (measures 34 3/4" x 48 1/4") (Learn More)

The Phantom of the Opera, the classic 1925 Rupert Julian Universal silent Paris France opera house murder mystery horror thriller ("Carl Laemmle presents Gaston Leroux's magnificent story of Parisian gaiety and intrigue"; "Weird! Wild! Wonderful!"; from the novel by Gaston Leroux, which was published in a serialized format in 1909 and 1910) starring Lon Chaney Sr. (in the title role as Erik, The Phantom), Norman Kerry (as Vicomte Raoul de Chagny), Mary Philbin (as Christine Daae), Arthur Edmund Carewe (as Ledoux), Gibson Gowland (as Simon Buquet), Carla Laemmle (uncredited as one of the ballerinas), Alexander Bevani, and "5000 others". Note that this movie was remade in 1943 with Claude Rains as the Phantom and Susannah Foster as Christine. In 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber made a musical stage play version, which is perhaps the most successful stage play of all time, and is still running on Broadway! In 2004, Webber's musical was made into a movie, with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. Also note that as they did with many of their major productions at this time, Universal created two completely different sets of lobby cards, with different designs and two title cards, so there are sixteen first release cards, two sets of eight.

Important Added Info: Note that there are some very unusual aspects about this poster! It measures larger than a Swedish one-sheet, which usually measures around 27" x 39", and yet it is clearly a one-panel poster (I have seen a very few two-panel Swedish posters that measure twice the size of a regular Swedish one-sheet). The unusual size of this poster is not that surprising to us, given that this was a massive release for Universal, and they did many unusual advertising in its U.S. release, and it certainly seems reasonable they might have also done unusual advertising for its European release. Something else unusual about this poster is that, while the poster is printed on poster paper that is the same as other Swedish posters we have seen from the 1920s and 1930s, the image on the poster has a brown border around the edges, and then an additional white border around the brown border (and the edges of the brown border are not straight and even). Finally, the printer information of the poster is in the additional white border, and not in the brown border, so it is not as though the white border was added. However, I have spoken to one of the world's leading dealers about this, and he tells me that he has seen an original release Swedish poster from "Greed", and he says it was a similar size with the same sort of printing. Finally, note that the great art on this poster is by the legendary Swedish poster artist Eric Rohman, who is most often associated with classic 1930s and 1940s titles, but who began doing Swedish posters in 1917, if not earlier, and he did many 1920s Swedish movie posters.

Condition: very good to fine. There is a semi-circular tear in the top center of the title area (in the bottom of the "O" of "FANTOMEN" and extending into the background area to the right of it). There are small tears and tiny paper loss at the top and middle crossfolds and a couple of tiny tears in the foldline between them. Someone put conservation tape on the back of the above areas. Other than the above, the poster is in really exceptional condition, with the most minor of fold and border wear. The poster was folded like a U.S. one-sheet, but because of its larger size, it measures approximately 12" x 17 1/2" when it is fully folded, so it will need to be sent in a large flat package.
