Auction History Result Lot #: JW 076 STAR PACKER linen one-sheet movie poster '34 great John Wayne image! Date Sold 7/10/2004Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. Appears in John Wayne Movie Posters at Auction CATALOG SOLD OUT The image at right appears in the auction catalog we published as shown above and was sold long ago and we do NOT have it available for purchase. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) The Star Packer, the 1934 Robert N. Bradbury (billed as "R.N. Bradbury") cowboy western ("A whirlwind of action in a tornado of trouble! - The sensational western star shows the bad men of the West what fightin' means.") starring John Wayne, Verna Hillie, George 'Gabby' Hayes, Yakima Canutt, and Billy Franey. Note that John Wayne's horse in his First National movies was "Duke", but when he switched to Lone Star, his horse was "Starlight" (but unlike Duke, Starlight was not credited). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good to very good. This poster was linenbacked, but it was either NOT linenbacked by a very talented restorer, or it was linenbacked many years ago, and has received rough handling over the years. You can see signs of the restoration from a distance. This is a poster that would greatly benefit from additional professional restoration. See below for this poster's pre-restoration condition (we are the only major auction company we know of that shares this information with our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). good to very good. The poster had tack holes with rust stains in all the borders, but only minor fold wear within the image. But there are some strange stains in the upper left of the image in the background (to the left of the horse's head and neck) and one similar stain just by Wayne's eye at the poster's center. These stains appear to be some sort of great paint (is it possible someone used this poster as a dropcloth?). In any event, whoever linenbacked the poster backed it exactly as is, with no attempt at restoration, and they backed it on to some sort of very thin linen, with no excess. Surely a talented restorer could easily remove the poster from this backing, and after restoring the great stains (which may be able to be chemically removed) and touching up the border stians and holes, this poster will look wonderful, and it will have little paint or restoration within the image area!
