An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (11x14; LC; measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) Variete (released in the U.S. in 1926 as "Variety"), the 1925 E.A. Dupont (Ewald Andre Dupont) German silent circus carnival romantic love triangle melodrama ("Written and Directed by E.A. Dupont"; "An UFA Production") starring Emil Jannings, Lya de Putti, Maly Delschaft, Warwick Ward, and Alice Hechy. Note that in the American release of this movie, it tells of a former famous aerialist in a German circus who was crippled while performing, and who has a beautiful young wife, but can only work in the concession stand; his wife has an affair with a handsome young acrobat and the husband kills him; after serving a long prison term, the old man is released from jail. This was drastically different than the original German version! In that version, which had twice as long of a running time, Jannings had a wife he deserts to begin an affair with de Putti (in the American version, the wife is never seen or mentioned), and de Putti is his girlfriend, and not his wife. This changed the entire meaning of the movie, for in the German version, it shows how a man betrays his wife and then ironically, he is betrayed himself, but this was too scandalous for American censors, who also cut scenes they deemed too sexual, including one where Jannings helps de Putti take off her clothes! Note that director E.A. Dupont was a major star of silent German cinema, and his greatest film was this one. But he had great difficult adapting to sound movies, and he made a number of movies in the 1930s in Germany, England, and the U.S. (for several different studios), but he never regained the stature he had in the 1920s. One of his last efforts was the very forgettable "The Neanderthal Man" in 1953. What a comedown for such a great talent. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Condition: fine.
