Date Sold 10/25/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1956 Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 11" x 17" [28 x 43 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More) Shichinin No Samurai (released in the U.S. in 1956 as "The Magnificent Seven", and in other English-speaking countries as "The Seven Samurai"), the classic 1954 Akira Kurosawa Japanese hired-professionals-save-a-tiny-town action epic (this great movie was the basis for the equally classic "The Magnificent Seven", it won the New York Film Critics award and was nominated for two Oscars!) starring Toshiro Mifune, Takashi Shimura, Seiji Miyaguchi, Yoshio Inaba, and Minoru Chiaki. Note that this film was first released in the U.S. under the title "The Magnificent Seven". We're not sure when the U.S. title was changed to the now familiar "The Seven Samurai", but it was certainly before the 1960 "The Magnificent Seven" was released (we have found newspaper ads from 1957 that still use the original title). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this pressbook, which has the "Magnificent Seven" title (the only other items we have auctioned with this title are a handful of stills), and it sold for $526! Seeing this pressbook tells us for certain that there were NO lobby cards made for this release, and that the one-sheet was black & white with reviews. The pressbook does mention that there was a "forty by sixty" also available that cost $7.50, and we wish we could know that that looked like, but we imagine few theaters ordered it! Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded down the middle. It has staple holes in the top right corner going through all the pages, with some small tears where the staple was roughly removed (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
