An Art Print (measures 15" x 18 1/2" [38 x 47 cm]) (Learn More) Love Among the Ruins, the 1975 George Cukor made-for-TV lawyer legal romantic comedy melodrama starring Katharine Hepburn, Laurence Olivier, Colin Blakely, Richard Pearson, Joan Sims, Leigh Lawson, and Gwen Nelson NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Al Hirschfeld Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by Katharine Hepburn, Laurence Olivier, AND Al Hirschfeld, and it is hand-numbered "APXVI/XXXIII", which means that it is #16 of 33, and that it is an "artist's proof". Artist's proofs are printed in a much lesser amount for the artist by the printer (note that "AP" written on the print). Since AP's are "closer to the artist's hand" they tend to be much more valuable than the prints of a signed and numbered limited edition! But in this case, the poster is extra special, because the regular limited edition print was created by the Margo Feiden Gallery (Al Hirschfeld's representative), and those prints are solely signed by Al Hirschfeld. In the case of THIS print, it was later also signed by Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier (no doubt because of who owned it; see below). Unfortunately, the pen Laurence Olivier used was not up to the task, and the ink has faded massively, but you can see the indentation of his signature to the right of Hepburn's (but you must look very close up and tilt it to the light). Our consignor purchased this at an auction of the estate of Laurance Evans, the English theatrical agent, and no doubt Mr. Evans obtained the added signatures. Our consignor does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signatures to be authentic. The regular limited edition prints are sold by the Margo Feiden Gallery for $1,500 each, but of course, this is from the artist proof edition, and it has the two added signatures (although the one is massively faded). Condition: good to very good. The print itself is in nice condition. As noted above, the signature of Laurence Olivier has massively faded. Had he never signed it, we would grade this print as "very good to fine". So one can think of it as if he didn't sign it, but however one thinks of it, please be sure to take all of the above into consideration before bidding on this limited edition print.
