eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 4z001 MARIHUANA 1sh '40s unleashed passions of innocent girls caught up in wild dope parties! Date Sold 11/13/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Undated (probably 1940s) Vintage Theatrical One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 26 1/2" x 40" [67 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Marihuana, the 1935 Dwain Esper marijuana marihuana pot weed drug crime thriller ("Daring Drug Expose!"; "Horror Shame Despair!"; "Today's headlines.... Tomorrow's despair....!"; "What happens at marihuana parties?"; "Lust crime sorrow despair shame hate"; "Not recommended for children"; "Smoke that gets in youth's eyes!"; "Misery"; "Weird orgies, wild parties, unleashed passions!"; "America's Crime Creator!"; "A puff of smoke changed their lives!"; "The weed with roots in Hell!", "The sweet pill...that makes life bitter!"; "The most daring picture ever made!") starring Harley Wood, Gloria Browne, Pat Carlyle, Juanita Crosland, Dorothy Dehn, Paul Ellis, Richard Erskine, Hugh McArthur and Hal Taggart. At the time this movie was meant to be a "daring drug expose", but it is now laughable and a camp classic, and posters from the first release of the movie in 1935 (and the roadshow releases that followed it in the late 1930s and early 1940s) are both rare and extremely desired by collectors. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that there is no way of dating this poster, but it was found with a group of similar posters that are from the late 1940s and early 1950s, so it almost certainly dates from a roadshow release of this movie during those years. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that the poster is on a heavy board (it was created that way) and was likely created by a regional company that supplied posters for roadshow releases of low budget movies. It will need to be sent in a very large flat package. UPDATED 11/12/2012: Note that the consignor of these posters tells us that, contrary to what was written in the auction description, the posters had Plexiglas over them for the years they were displayed, but obviously it did not provide enough protection to the posters, because they sustained the damaged described on each. Condition: fair. The poster was created on a heavy board, with red tape around the edges to create a "picture frame-like" border. Someone nailed the poster to a wall with nails in the red border areas and it hung on a wall unprotected for decades, and there are scattered brown marks (brown staining in the lower left in the girl's face) and some long scratches scattered throughout the poster, including a long one down the center of the poster and a 12" one to the left of it going through the man's eye. There is deterioration in the right of the top border. The red tape is separated and frayed in the corners. Certainly, the poster has so many defects that I would think many collectors would prefer to give it professional restoration, because it is true that a talented restorer can work wonders on a poster like this! But this might be quite expensive, so please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored!
