An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 30 1/4" [60 x 77 cm]) (Learn More) Sein Grosster Bluff (released in English-speaking countries as "His Greatest Bluff"), the 1927 Henrik Galeen & Harry Piel German silent romantic mistaken identity comedy (about twin brothers who fool a woman into thinking they are the same person) starring Harry Piel (in a dual role), Toni Tetzlaff, Lotte Lorring, Albert Paulig, Fritz Greiner, and Marlene Dietrich (in an early role). Note that director Harry Piel was a major figure in early cinema. He wrote and directed his first movie when he was just 20 years old in 1912, and he made several movies over the next three years, and then began acting in them as well! He made many movies over the next decades. In 1933, he joined the Nazi party and made movies for them. In 1934, he made Der Herr der Welt, a science fiction movie with robots, but he had actually used robots in a movie he made in 1915! At the end of World War II, he was sentenced to 6 months in jail and banned from the film industry for 5 years. In 1950, he started a new film company, but did not have much success, and he retired in 1953 and passed away in 1961. Unfortunately, almost all the negatives of his silent films were destroyed when Germany was bombed during World War II, so few of his films survive, and that, combined with his Nazi collaboration, has caused him to be largely forgotten, except by major film buffs. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a Danish program, and NO other movie paper items from this movie until we received this Belgian poster! Also note that this is a rare "pre-War" Belgian poster. Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!).
UPDATED 04/15/2020: Note that a knowledgeable collector pointed out that the artwork on this poster features Marlene Dietrich (who plays a thief in this early role!). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had some tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss in the vertical fold between the middle and bottom crossfolds, with minor wear on the other folds, and minor fold wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
