A Paperbacked Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Flying Down to Rio, the classic 1933 Thornton Freeland South America Rio De Janeiro Brazil airplane aviation pilot romantic love triangle musical ("Musical Romance Staged in the Clouds..."; "Too big for the world... So they staged it in the clouds... Too beautiful for words... So they set it to music!"; "Come, take a joy ride through the sky!"; "Romance that soars on the wings of song") starring Dolores Del Rio, Gene Raymond, Paul Roulien, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, and Blanche Friderici. Note that this was the first of the ten movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made together, which explains why they were fourth and fifth billed, and not pictured on any poster art! Also note that this movie was made at a time when Hollywood had a "love affair" with South America in general, and Brazil (and Rio de Janeiro). Paul Roulien was a Brazilian singer who came to Hollywood in 1931, and he sang in several movies. In this movie, he was part of a romantic love triangle with Dolores Del Rio and Gene Raymond, and it was his best role. In 1934, he returned to Brazil and quit acting in 1938. In 1996, we auctioned a one-sheet from this movie, and it sold for $81,700, and that was the only time we auctioned that. Since then, we have auctioned seven scene cards from this movie (six different ones, with one auctioned two times), but we have NEVER before auctioned this title card, and we have only auctioned two window cards, and no other first release posters. Obviously, the one-sheet is both virtually unobtainable and beyond the reach of almost any collector, but this rare title card will be a prize in any collection! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Note that this lobby card has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the lobby card was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that keeps the "feel" of the lobby card similar to that of the original lobby card. Some restorers prefer to paperback lobby cards on to a heavy backing, while others prefer to use a very lightweight backing. The advantage of a lightweight backing is that the card still "feels" like a regular lobby card, but a heavier backing makes restoration easier to do and less noticeable. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the card had most of its blank borders trimmed off and it had some faint dot stains scattered in the image. Overall, the lobby card was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The card was nicely backed, and the borders were well replaced (but the restorer did not paint in the tiny "COUNTRY OF ORIGIN U.S.A." in the far right border), and you can see slight signs of the faint stains scattered in the card (because the restorer did it in a minimalist fashion, so that the card would not have lots of paint restoration; see our images).
