An Autographed Letter (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More) William A. Wellman was a legendary director and producer from the 1920s to the 1950s. Some of his films include: Wings, The Public Enemy, A Star is Born (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), The Call of the Wild, The Story of G.I. Joe, The High and the Mighty (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), Battleground (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), and The Ox-Bow Incident. He was primarily known for action films, but he proved his ability in non-action movies such as A Star is Born! He passed away in 1975 at the age of 79. Important Added Info: Note that this letter has been personally autographed (signed) by William Wellman (he signed as "Billy"). He wrote it in 1922 on William Fox Vaudeville Company stationery, and he mailed it to his parents in a Dustin Farnum envelope (which is included in this auction)! Apparently, he grabbed whatever stationery and envelope he could find! The entire 4-page letter is handwritten by Mr. Wellman and he was telling his "Little Mother and Dad" about his latest experiences including breaking his nose diving into a pool. This letter was auctioned at a TCM/Bonham's auction in 2019, and it was consigned by William Wellman Jr., so we are 100% certain the letter was handwritten and signed by the famed director, William Wellman, although the auction did not provide a certificate of authenticity. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased (although we prefer they do any "authenticating" while the auction is "live" and before they place a bid) and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: very good.
