An Original Vintage Unfolded World War II Poster (measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Instructions To All Persons of Japanese Ancestry, the 1942 U.S. World War II (WWII) Home Front poster ("Western Defense Command and Fourth Army Wartime Civil Control Administration"; "Civilian Exclusion Order. 41") notifying Japanese Americans and immigrants to report to the Civil Control Station in San Francisco, California. During World War II, the United States forcibly relocated and incarcerated people of Japanese, German and Italian ancestry in concentration camps (the vast majority were Japanese). These actions were issued by president Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1983, the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians found little evidence of Japanese disloyalty and concluded that the incarceration had been the product of racism. In 1988, the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 officially apologized for the internment on behalf of the U.S. government and authorized reparations after admitting that the actions were based on "race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership". Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this really cool (and historically significant) poster! It was consigned to us by David Kusumoto, whose stepmother was a Japanese-American who was interned during World War II from 1942 to 1945. His father and uncle fortunately escaped being interned because they were not in California at the time, and his uncle, Tedeo "Ted" Kusumoto, not only bore the U.S. no ill will over this, but he enlisted in the U.S. Army in Montana and fought with distinction and won a Silver Star! So of course, this war poster had very special significance for David, a major poster collector. The poster is printed the exact same size as movie window cards of this period, and it is on a similar heavy paper stock that cannot be rolled. Condition: very good to fine. The special poster has slight toning around the edges, but it is otherwise in really nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
