Date Sold 12/8/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded International One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Misfits, the 1961 John Huston modern-day romantic cowboy western ("It shouts and sings with life... explodes with love!"; "Never again will the screen hold such excitement!"; "The world's greatest photographers shoot 'the Misfits'!"; with a screenplay by Arthur Miller) starring Clark Gable (in his last film), Marilyn Monroe (in her last completed film), Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter, Eli Wallach, and James Barton (in his last film). Note that Arthur Miller was at the time married to Monroe, but the marriage fell apart during filming. He began to see Inge Morath, a photographer documenting production of this film, and she later became his third and final wife. Also note that Clark Gable went on a crash diet before production started, losing 35 pounds. His health was already precarious, and he hated working with Marilyn Monroe, who could not remember her lines and did not show up on time, which aggravated his condition, and he suffered from a coronary thrombosis the day after shooting finished, dying ten days later. He was 59. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we can't say for certain, but we believe this poster is an "international" style one-sheet (meaning it was printed in the U.S. for use in non-U.S. countries). It has a completely different design from any other poster for this movie, and the "regular" one-sheet is black & white, while this poster is full-color. We have never seen or auctioned this poster before! It has a 1961 copyright and a 1961 litho number, so we know it to definitely be from the first release. It also has a tiny printer logo in the bottom right corner from a Cleveland printer. This certainly is likely the absolute most rare Marilyn Monroe poster, and we wish we knew who created the image, because it is very unusual and striking! Note that all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I of eMoviePoster.com's December Major Auction were consigned to us by legendary French dealer/collector Dominique Besson. Dominique Besson started collecting movie posters in 1981, and became a dealer in French and European posters in 1994, and has remained as a top dealer ever since! But in addition, 30 years ago, Dominique began collecting U.S. one-sheets, first those with Saul Bass art, and then adding Alfred Hitchcock posters, then Humphrey Bogart, and he finally ended up collecting in an amazing total of 47 different categories, purchasing the posters from all over the world! Now the time has come to sell this wonderful collection, and Dominique has chosen eMoviePoster.com to do so, through our auctions! As noted above, all but 28 of the folded one-sheets in this Part I come from this more remarkable collection (the 28 that do not were consigned to us by other collectors, and are clearly marked). This is not all of the Dominique Besson collection we are auctioning. In addition, there are approximately 200 more folded one-sheets that will be in Part IV of this special auction (ones from the 1970s to present), and there are approximately 100 unfolded one-sheets that will be in Part III (including many great ones). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase folded one-sheets (all of which have had no professional restoration) from one of the greatest one-sheet collections assembled! Note that this one-sheet is from the category that Dominique Besson collected on that he labeled "Marilyn Monroe". Condition: very good. The poster has tiny separation at the top and bottom crossfolds, with tiny creases at the middle crossfold. There are some tiny creases and scuffs on parts of the folds, and some faint creases and scuffs in the solid colored areas. There are pinholes in the corners. Learn More about condition grades
