An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Style B Italian One-Panel (known in Italy as a "2 Fogli") Movie Poster (1p; measures 39" x 55" [99 x 140 cm]) (Learn More) Paisa (released in the U.S. in 1948 as "Paisan"), the classic 1946 Roberto Rossellini Italian World War II (WWII) neo-realist military romantic melodrama ("The lives and loves of GI's in Italy"; "English dialogue made in Rome"; set in the waning days of World War II, about the U.S. soldiers in Italy, and their interactions with the local citizens, as presented in six different segments; because director Rossellini wanted the movie to be as realistic as possible, he mostly cast non-actors in all of the main roles) starring Camela Sazio, Robert Van Loon, Dots Johnson, Alfonsino Pasca (billed as "Alfonsino"), Gar Moore, Maria Michi, Harriet Medin (billed as "Harriet White"), Renzo Avanzo, William Tubbs (billed as "Bill Tubbs"), Dale Edmonds, and Cigolani. Note that Dots Johnson was born Hylan Johnson and was a black African American actor who, along with most of the other actors in this movie, made his acting debut here. However, many of the other actors never appeared in other movies, but Johnson went on to appear in several notable movies including No Way Out and The Joe Louis Story. Also note that Italy had been devastated in World War II, and it was a major accomplishment for this movie to be filmed right after the war. It was released in September of 1946 at the Venice Film Festival, and then released throughout Italy in December of 1946. It did not open in France until September of 1947, and in the U.S. until March of 1948, with most other major countries having their first releases over the next two years. First release movie posters from this movie from ANY country are incredibly scarce. First release movie posters from Italy are virtually unknown! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Canino Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned one example of this poster (which is a "country of origin" poster for this Italian movie) before and that one sold for $848! This is the style B one-panel, and we have only twice before auctioned the style A, which does not show the black soldier. This style B has a great full-length image of Dots Johnson, the black African American actor, referenced above who went on to appear in other movies. Also note that this is an extremely rare Italian poster printed relatively soon after World War II! Virtually no Italian posters survive from during or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in Europe during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all posters from before World War II, and also from during the war, and the first few years afterwards. Condition: fair. The poster has paper loss in the top right corner, extending into the background. It has a foreign stamp in the lower left credits area and it also has pinholes, tears and tiny paper loss around the edges and some wear on parts of the folds. It is fortunate that the paper loss is the kind that can relatively easily be recreated, but bear this in mind before bidding on this very rare poster. Learn More about condition grades
