(Learn More) The Black Cat, the classic 1934 Edgar Ulmer Universal horror thriller ("Based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe"; "Things you never saw before or ever dreamed of!"; the ads said "based on the Edgar Allan Poe story", but it is very loosely based on it!; Karloff and Lugosi are arch enemies who meet again after many years, and there is a honeymooning couple who is marooned at Karloff's creepy castle, and Lugosi tries to rescue them and get revenge on his old enemy, and meanwhile, there is Satanic worship and black cats roaming the place, and all kinds of weird stuff that you need to see for yourself!) starring Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, David Manners, Julie Bishop (billed as "Jacqueline Wells"), Lucille Lund, Luis Alberni, and Henry Armetta NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this 1934 first release pressbook, but we have auctioned a window card, and the cover of this pressbook has the image that appears on the window card, and we auctioned the window card for $14,940! Also note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle and was separating at the left and right ends of each page. Someone put small tape in those areas and also taped down the spine of the covers where they were separating. They put tape on the back of the center of the cover, because it had completely separated along that area, and there was some tiny paper loss in that area on the center of the front cover. Other than the above, the pressbook is in pretty nice condition. The two supplements were printed on newsprint, as many supplements of this time were, and they have both darkened and are fragile and must be handled with care. Learn More about condition grades
