An Original Vintage Theatrical German Movie Campaign Book (measures 10 3/4" x 13 3/4" [27 x 35 cm]; 88 pages) (Learn More) Parufamet 1927-28, the 1927 German campaign book featuring art and information about upcoming Parufamet productions (this was at the time when Paramount Pictures and MGM bailed out UFA, which had overextended itself and was on the verge of bankruptcy, and in return, the company was renamed "Parufamet", and it had to distribute 20 films from each American studio in Germany each year, and they also distributed their own movies). So at the start of this volume, there is a full page that shows images of the "UFA-Stars", followed by a page of "Paramount-Stars", and another page of "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer-Stars", which of course pictures all the great stars of all three companies, including Brigitte Helm, Leni Riefenstahl, Clara Bow, Harold Lloyd, Lon Chaney Sr., Greta Garbo, and all the rest! This is followed by pages of the best directors from each company, and then there are 80 more pages of ads for upcoming movies (the entire volume is printed in silver and black ink, with no color, and this was clearly an intentional design choice). Those 80 pages of this book have wonderful German ads for movies from all three studios, including upcoming movies with the above listed stars, plus great ads for "Chang" by Cooper and Schoedsack, "The Scarlet Letter" and "Annie Laurie" with Lillian Gish, "The Demon" with Paul Wegener, "Ben-Hur", "Street of Sin" with Emil Jannings, "Sorrows of Satan" (D.W. Griffith), "The Show" (Tod Browning), "New York" with Ricardo Cortez, and so much more! There are three different Lon Chaney Sr. movies with incredible ads and the ads are mostly photos combined with art, but it is all very striking. We saved the best for last! The highlight of this volume is a great full-page ad for Metropolis, which shows the classic image from the three-sheet just as it was printed (with the credits; see our image)! We wish we could have pictured every single page, but please look at the ones we did picture, and know that the ones we did not are just as nice. Note that even though this campaign book was likely sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived (and surely German editions of campaign books are even more rare than those sent to U.S. theater owners, both because of German World War II paper drives, and because the ones made during World War II have Nazi content!). I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this campaign book is beyond rare! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned this book before! Note: We have 18 images of the campaign books in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 18 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 8. Condition: good to very good. Three of the 2-page spreads (with different ads on each page) have some damage. The most significant is pages 52 and 53, which have ads for a Florence Vidor movie and a Heinrich George movie. On those two pages, something caused them to become slightly stuck together, and there is surface paper loss in the center of each page, and many tiny areas of surface paper loss scattered down the center of both pages. It does not affect the other side of either page. There is another 2-page spread, pages 36 and 37, which have an ad for Lillian Gish in Annie Laurie facing an ad for an Ufa circus film, and on that, the Lillian Gish ad has many tiny areas of surface paper loss in the center (but not affecting her image), and the facing page has a smaller number of scattered tiny bits of surface paper loss. The third 2-page spread is pages 22 and 23, which has an ad for a Richard Dix movie facing an ad for a Norma Shearer movie, and on those two pages, there are tiny bits of surface paper loss in the center and some scuffing in the solid black areas on those pages, but the ads are much less affected than in the other two cases. There are tiny areas of surface paper loss scattered around the edges of both covers, with a few small stains. Other than the three 2-page spreads described above and the cover defects, the book is in surprisingly nice condition. Most of the ads are in fantastic condition, including the Metropolis. It is very fortunate that the six ads that have defects (which are not that major) are not very significant movies at all, and the Metropolis, the Lon Chaneys, and all the other major movies do not have defects. This is a truly wonderful book! Learn More about condition grades
