An Undated (probably 1990s) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Folded French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 46" x 61 1/4" [117 x 156 cm]) (Learn More) L'opera de quat'sous (released in the U.S. as "The Threepenny Opera"), the 1931 G.W. Pabst (Georg Wilhelm Pabst) U.S./German musical crime comedy (based on the play by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill) starring Albert Prejean (as Mackie/Mack the Knife), Florelle (as Polly), Gaston Modot, Margo Lion (as Jenny), and Vladimir Sokoloff. This was a French version of "The Threepenny Opera" made by Warner Bros. in 1931. Universal did the same thing with "Dracula" in 1931. They filmed the movie twice, once in English, and once in Spanish, with two entirely different casts, U.S. actors for the English version and mostly Latin actors for the Spanish version, obviously for release in Spanish speaking countries, and the same was done with this movie, except this movie was released in German and French (the German language version, "Die 3 Groschen-Oper", starred Rudolf Forster and Lotte Lenya). Interestingly, although Warner Bros. apparently financed this movie, they did not create an English language version, perhaps because it was considered too daring for American audiences (they solely released it undubbed in German in the U.S. in 1933, two years after it was made!).
