An Undated (probably 1940s) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 41" [71 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Notorious Elinor Lee, the 1940 Oscar Micheaux all-black African American boxing sports gambling romantic melodrama (with the classic plot of gangsters using a "bad" woman to get a talented young boxer to throw a big fight, so the gangsters can cash in) starring Edna Mae Harris, Carman Newsome, Gladys Williams (in the title role as Elinor Lee), Robert Earl Jones, Vera Burelle, "and a Great All Star Colored Cast". Note that this movie was released by the Oscar Micheaux Pictures Corporation in 1940, and any movie paper from that release is beyond rare (we have seen an image of the full-color one-sheet from that release, but have never auctioned any movie paper item from that first release). It was re-released by Sack Amusement Enterprises in the 1940s, and movie paper from that release is also extremely rare (we have only auctioned a single one-sheet from that re-release). If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that Robert Earl Jones (who plays the lead boxer in this movie) is a fascinating figure in black movie history, but he is largely forgotten today, except by major film buffs. He appeared in this movie and another ("Lying Lips") the year before, and then he resumed acting somewhat in the 1960s to 1980s, almost always in very minor roles (he had one memorable role in "The Sting", where he played "Luther Coleman", who was killed near the beginning of the movie, and that murder set the major plot elements in motion). He was born in 1910, and he dropped out of school in the third grade, when he helped his parents sharecropping, and later worked on the railroad. He was a sparring partner for champion boxer Joe Louis in 1937. His acting career was derailed by his participation in the Communist Party in the 1930s, and he was blacklisted in the early 1950s. He was noted for having a deep mellifluous voice. You probably have guessed that his son is James Earl Jones, who has a similar wonderful voice, and also played a memorable black boxer, Jack Johnson, in "The Great White Hope"! He appeared on stage with his son in three plays in the 1960s. He remained athletic throughout his life, running in the New York City Marathon several times, including in 1996, at the age of 86! He passed away in 2006 at the age of 96. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this one-sheet measures 28" x 41" [71 x 104 cm]. Condition: fair. The poster is very fragile and has separation, tears, and some tiny paper loss on parts of many foldlines. It has paper loss in the left of the top fold and at the top crossfold, but fortunately, those are in solid colored areas. The poster is in urgent need of expert professional restoration. But the poster is mostly "all there" (except for the two areas described above), and after linenbacking by a talented professional, the poster will display well. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored! Learn More about condition grades
