Note that if you ever wondered how far back classic crime detective cliches go, you can look at this movie, which includes a pair of detectives, one crusty and old, and the other young, brash, and handsome, and they go from one false lead to another, and they even investigate forensic evidence, many decades prior to shows like CSI!
