Grant) and John Elliot (as General Robert E. Lee). Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", retitled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this set of stills has a great provenance! Johnny Crawford, who first came to fame as the son in the TV series "The Rifleman" and later became a band leader loved movies, and early on he collected many movie stills and more. This set of 8x10 stills was consigned to us from his collection! Note also that the stills are glued to a linen-like backing (we think it is highly likely that these are key book stills, and that someone trimmed away the extra 1" from the left of the still, no doubt so it could be put in a frame). Condition: very good. As noted above, approximately 1" of the left edge of each key book still was neatly trimmed off. Each has a few light scuffs that are mostly only noticeable when the still is tilted to the light and some creases around the edges. Overall the key book stills are in pretty nice condition!
