V.L.S.E. was created in 1915 when Chicago distributor George Kleine orchestrated a four-way film distribution partnership for the Vitagraph, Lubin, Selig, and Essanay companies, so that they could save money by jointly advertising their product. V-L-S-E was dissolved 1916 when Vitagraph purchased a controlling interest in the other three companies, which may have been Vitagraph's plan from the very beginning!
