Circus was a medium-sized American circus which was founded in 1884 as W.W. Cole's New Colossal Shows by William Washington Cole. In the 1930s, the circus employed two noted animal trainers, Clyde Beatty and Allen King, both of whom traveled in their own railroad cars. Another well-known performer with the circus was Bob Strehlau (Juggles the Clown). In 1957, investors merged Beatty's show with the circus to form the Clyde Beatty - Cole Bros. Circus and the show became a major player in the circus industry for over 20 years. In the 1980s, the last surviving investor gifted the circus to Florida State University who later sold it to John W. Pugh who renamed the show back to Cole Bros. Circus. As of 2016 the show was essentially defunct, largely in response to animal rights activists advocating against the use of animals for live performances. "Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction either was NOT linenbacked very well, OR the poster had more significant defects (you can tell which type it is by reading our written comments about the poster's condition). In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image! Condition: good. The poster was never folded and had a snipe glued across the bottom blank border that had been almost entirely removed, but there are many traces of paper across that border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed onto a thin linen, and has been handled roughly since that time, and there are now many creases and tears around the edges of the poster. If I owned this really cool poster, I would surely have it removed from the thin linen and properly backed, and it would look wonderful! Learn More about condition grades
