An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Chapter #1 (The Lost Princess) One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Lost City, the 1920 E.A. Martin silent Africa jungle lost civilization fantasy action adventure serial ("A wild animal serial of continuous thrills"; "In 15 sensational episodes"; "Fifteen sensational episodes"; "The Lost City of the African Jungle"; "Story by Frederick Chapin") starring Juanita Hansen, George Chesebro, Frank Clark, Hector Dion, and Irene Wallace. Note that this was one of the earliest Warner Bros. movies. Their advertising claimed that it was actually filmed in Africa, but it was not. However, the Warner Bros. borrowed the wild animals from the Selig Zoo, and it was one of the very first movies to use actual wild animals in its filming (and also one of the first to have a beautiful white princess of a lost civilization!). It reportedly cost over $1,000,000 to produce! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this chapter 1 one-sheet from this silent serial. We previously auctioned a chapter 7 one-sheet for $3,100, a chapter 10 one-sheet (in much lesser condition) for $1,565, and a chapter 3 one-sheet that sold for $1,265 (27 years ago)! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small tears and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of many folds, with some tears scattered down the center, and some tiny paper loss on some of those tears. It had tears and stains across the bottom fold, affecting the letters of the title. It had 1" trimmed from the bottom blank border, with some pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, and the restorer painted over the letters of the title and some of the other letters in the credits, to "even them out". In spite of the above defects, this extremely rare and historic poster will display well on the new owner's wall, or certainly, additional restoration could be performed, either with or without re-backing the poster.
