An Original Vintage Unfolded Stage Play Poster (measures 30" x 40 1/4" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Garrett O'Magh, the 1901 Augustus Pitou Irish/Ireland musical stage play production (of the musical partially written by Chauncey Olcott) starring Chauncey Olcott (in the title role as Garrett O'Magh), Charles Abbott, Mabel Andrew, Edith Baker, and George Brennan. Note that Chauncey Olcott was born in New York in 1858 to parents from County Cork, Ireland. He performed in minstrel shows as a young man and then went to London to study singing. He returned to New York, where Lillian Russell helped him become a Broadway star. Producer Augustus Pitou approached him in 1893 to take over the lead in his Irish musical play, "Mavourneeen" (replacing William J. Scanlan), and Olcott had great success in that role, and he continued to play in Irish musicals for the remainder of his career, many of which he not only acted and sang in, but also, he wrote and composed the songs as well (sometimes in collaboration with others), for a total of at least 20 plays between 1894 and 1920. He sang many of the great Irish standards, including "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" and "Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral". In 1925, he became ill and retired, and he moved to Monte Carlo, and passed away in 1932. His life story was portrayed in the 1947 movie, "My Wild Irish Rose", starring Dennis Morgan, and it was based on his biography, written by his widow in 1939. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of 78 very rare posters (including 53 WWI and WWII posters and 18 stage play posters) that mostly date from 1888 to 1945. These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these 78 posters (which even includes a remarkable 1873 P.T. Barnum poster from his "Traveling World's Fair")! Note that in June of 2016, we auctioned around 100 posters that were from this same archive. The 78 posters we are currently auctioning represent most of the remaining posters from this remarkable find (we certainly wish there were lots more, but unfortunately there are not, so this is likely your last opportunity to acquire these great rarities!). Condition: good to very good. The poster has creases and tears around the edges, with paper loss in the right of the top blank border and in the top of the right blank border, but only blank white paper is affected. There are smudges around the edges, with uneven darkening in the bottom right corner. There is a 5" tear in the left border that has a piece of tape on the back, and a 12" tear in the right of the top border that extends into the credits. Otherwise, the poster is in pretty nice condition, especially considering its age, and after a simple linenbacking, it will look fantastic! Learn More about condition grades
