CIRCUS ROOKIES LC '28

Lease from Hershenson/Allen Archive

An Original Vintage Movie Lobby Card (Learn More)

Circus Rookies, the 1928 Edward Sedgwick silent romantic love triangle circus slapstick comedy ("Karl Dane George K. Arthur in the greatest aggregation of long, loud lingering laughs ever brought together in one picture"; "Story by Edward Sedgwick and Lew Lipton"; set in a circus where Dane is a trainer of a gorilla, and Arthur is a would-be aerialist, and both love the pretty daughter of the circus owner, and Dane sabotages Arthur's attempts to join the circus, but in a rousing finale, the gorilla gets loose on a train, and Arthur saves the girl from the gorilla, and after the engineer jumps off the train, Arthur stops the train, and the gorilla beats up Dane, who was always mean to him!) starring Karl Dane, George K. Arthur, Louise Lorraine, Sydney Jarvis, Fred Humes (as Bimbo, the Man-Eating Ape), and Lou Costello (uncredited in a bit part as an extra!). Note that Karl Dane and George K. Arthur appeared in two of the same movies in the mid-1920s, and then in 1927, MGM paired the huge Dane with the diminutive Arthur as a comedy team in 1927's "Rookies", and they were a huge hit, and over the next four years, they appeared in a total of 17 comedies as a Laurel & Hardy-like slapstick comedy team. But Dane had a very thick accent, and he could not make the transition to sound movies, and he had a few bit parts given to him by friends, but by 1934, he was washed up, and he bought a hot dog cart which he displayed outside of the MGM gates! Apparently, he reasonably found this extremely depressing, and he soon committed suicide. The following year, Arthur retired from movies and became a Broadway producer among other careers, and he lived until 1985, when he was 86 years old! Also, note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. Finally, note that Fred Humes also played a gorilla in 1925's Lorraine of the Lions, and did so in a total of five movies between 1925 and 1944. We don't know if he owned an ape suit or borrowed one from the several other actors who specialized in ape roles!
