An Original Vintage RESTORED Theatrical Movie Pressbook Cover (measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]; see below for more) (Learn More) Mad Love, the 1935 Karl Freund medical doctor transplant romantic love triangle horror thriller ("Dead hands that live... and love... and kill!"; based on the French novel "Les Mains D'Orlac" [The Hands of Orlac] by Maurice Renard; about a mad plastic surgeon who is madly in love with an actress, but she is married to a concert pianist, but then his hands are crushed, and she convinces the plastic surgeon to replace his hands with a "hand transplant", but he uses the hands of an executed murderer, and the transplanted hands have ideas of their own!) starring Peter Lorre, Frances Drake, Colin Clive, Ted Healy (most famous as the person who started The Three Stooges; they were first billed as "Ted Healy and his Stooges"; he let them go on their own, hiring replacement "Stooges", but that did not work out well at all!), Isabel Jewell, Sara Haden, Edward Brophy, Keye Luke, Otto Hoffman, and Henry Kolker. Note that IMDb says that Isabel Jewell, who received fifth billing on the posters, had all of her scenes deleted! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: What is offered here LOOKS like the window card for "Mad Love", but actually, it is a pressbook cover that has had restoration so that it now looks identical to the window card. This is not as odd as it sounds, because in the mid 1930s, MGM made pressbooks that were the same size as window cards, and they put the words "Campaign Book" in large letters where the blank window card top was, and in the top right corner of the image (in the solid black background area), they put a circle that read "THIS IS ACTUAL REPRODUCTION OF WINDOW CARD AVAILABLE AT YOUR M.G.M. EXCHANGE". And in fact, that pressbook cover was printed from the exact same plates as the window card, so it truly is identical to the window card, except for the differences described above. Our consignor had purchased a pressbook cover that was separated from the rest of the pressbook, so he took a vintage 1935 window card that had a printed top for a specific theater (with 1935 dates on it) and he had a restorer glue the pressbook cover to the image area of the card, and then perform restoration to the resulting poster. SO WHAT YOU ARE BIDDING ON IS A PRESSBOOK COVER THAT HAS BEEN COMBINED WITH A 1935 WINDOW CARD AND HAS HAD RESTORATION SO THAT IT NOW APPEARS IDENTICAL TO THE WINDOW CARD. Condition: good, NO CUTS. The pressbook cover had the circular area described above in the top right solid background area that needed to be restored over so that it would look like the window card. It also had tears around the edges, which extended into the image, including Lorre's ear, the girl's hair, chin, and neck, and the end of the hand holding the knife. Overall, the pressbook cover was in "good" condition. It was restored to be made to look like the window card (including painting over the circular area at top right). The restoration was pretty well done, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects when you look closely at it. But it displays pretty well from a reasonable viewing distance. However, do not bid on this item unless you can accept that it is a pressbook cover that has been restored to look like a window card (and as described above, it was very similar to the window card).
