Wellman Northern Africa French Foreign Legion military war family relationship melodrama ("Gary Cooper is back at his fighting best in the most thrilling film of the Foreign Legion"; "Based on the Novel by Percival Christopher Wren"; about three brothers who all end up in the French Foreign Legion, serving together in the exact same location in North Africa) starring Gary Cooper (in the title role as Michael 'Beau' Geste), Ray Milland, Robert Preston, Brian Donlevy (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Susan Hayward (in her second credited movie role!), J. Carrol Naish, Donald O'Connor, James Stephenson, Heather Thatcher, and G.P. Huntley NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this "other company" one-sheet, and it sold for $780! This was printed by Associated Displays Corporation which was a company based in New York City. Before it was discovered by noted poster dealer/historian Walter Reuben, collectors did not know the name of this company (and thought it to be located in the Midwest), and it is often referred to as the "other company" (and we will continue to refer to it that way, since collectors know it that way). From 1936 to roughly 1941, this company printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts, half-sheets, three-sheets, 40x60s and stills) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The items almost always feature a tiny legal disclaimer and cast credits only. The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They did this by combining elements from different film scenes onto one poster or card. Sometimes, "other company" posters have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tears and tiny paper loss in the top quarter of the vertical fold, with a lesser amount of wear on the rest of the folds. It had tears and small paper loss in the corners, only in the blank area, except for one tiny bit in the top right corner in the blue background. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
