An Original Vintage Theatrical 7 1/2" x 9 1/4" [19 x 23 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Orson Welles' Journey Into Fear, the 1942 Norman Foster & Orson Welles World War II (WWII) military crime film noir ("The master dramatist turns his hand to mystery... and gives the screen a new conception of pyramiding suspense. - The gripping, breath-taking melodrama of an American engineer in the Middle East, possessing a secret the Nazis want... snared by a night club beauty, stalked by a ruthless killer whose relentless menace mounts terror by terror to one of the most thrilling climaxes on the screen."; "Screen Play by Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten"; "From the Novel by Eric Ambler"; about a U.S. Navy engineer who ends up pursued by Nazi agents while on a ship during World War II and he is involved with the mysterious Colonel Haki, who may or may not be helping him) starring Joseph Cotten, Dolores Del Rio, Ruth Warrick, Agnes Moorehead, Jack Durant, Everett Sloane, and Orson Welles (as Colonel Haki, a character who appeared again in the 1944 film The Mask of Dimitrios). Note that there is much about this movie that is shrouded in mystery! It was made while RKO was learning how poorly Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons were doing, and by the time it was released, Welles had been fired. Before it was completed, Welles was ordered to re-cut the beginning and end, to shoot more material, and to add a voice-over by Joseph Cotten! It is a certainty that Welles was the producer and co-screenwriter with Joseph Cotten, but many people believe that Welles actually directed it as well, although others think he only directed parts of it (Welles himself said that he did not direct any of it, but he was known to not always tell the truth!). Important Added Info: Note that this great still was created in 1941 when Michele Morgan was cast as the lead in Journey Into Fear, and it was taken by Ernest A. Bachrach. But star Orson Welles did not want Morgan for the lead and wanted her replaced with his girlfriend, Dolores Del Rio, and in fact, he won that battle, and Morgan was replaced, but this portrait was taken prior to that cast change! Also note that this still has been trimmed and it now measures 7 1/2" x 9 1/4" [19 x 23 cm]. Note that this great individual still (and a number of others, both singles and sets) come from a recently discovered collection of mostly 1930s stills (but with some from the 1920s, and some from the 1940s and 1950s) that came from the estate of a longtime journalist who wrote about these movies and visited the sets of many movies and were given these stills at that time. They are all rare original stills from the first release of the movies, and some have cool candid images. We auctioned a similar group of stills from this wonderful collection in our auctions that closed April 12, 2022, and now we are auctioning almost all of the remaining stills from this collection (in singles and sets, just as they were last time). After this set of auctions, there will be only a handful left from this collection, so this is pretty much your last opportunity to acquire these extremely rare stills, including some from movies you almost never see anything from! Condition: good. The still was trimmed around the edges. There is pencil writing on the back of the upper center of the image that caused light indentations on the front, but they are mostly only noticeable when the still is tilted to the light.
