A 1938 Re-Release Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Dracula, the classic 1931 Tod Browning Universal vampire monster horror thriller ("The Greatest of all Horror Thrillers"; "The Vampire Thriller!"; "The story of the strangest passion the world has ever known!"; "Do vampires really exist?"; "From the famous novel & play by Bram Stoker") starring Bela Lugosi (in the title role as Count Dracula), David Manners, Helen Chandler, Dwight Frye (if there had been a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award in 1931, Frye would have surely won it for his wild over-the-top portrayal as Renfield!), Edward Van Sloan (as Professor Abraham Van Helsing), Frances Dade, and Herbert Bunston NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned three examples of this 1938 re-release scene card, and the last one was 6 years ago, when it sold for $702! Note that this classic horror movie was re-released in 1938, just seven years after its first release. Apparently it proved extremely popular in that first re-release, because it stayed in release into 1939, and more movie paper was needed (surely because they ran out of 1938 movie paper), and they printed a 1939 set of lobby cards, with at least some different scenes (we have not seen the entire set). We have noted the copyright date on this card, for those who care about this distinction (we have previously auctioned lobby cards with a 1938 copyright and also others with a 1939 copyright, so we know this was intentionally done and was not an error). Note that this card has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the card onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the card still looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the card no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with cards that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the cards it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The card had two faint vertical lines of darkening down the middle left, one going through the girl's face and one going through her neck, but both missing both images of Lugosi. It had pinholes, smudges, and small paper loss around the edges. Overall, the card was in good condition prior to restoration. Given the card's defects described above, the restorer did a pretty good job, but you can see signs of the defects and the restoration, and the card displays pretty well (see our super-sized images to get a good sense of exactly how the card looks now).
