Each has his own personal reasons for wanting to get there. Then strange things begin to happen. The telegraph is mysteriously cut... the way station burned to the ground. Note that John Wayne had received the starring role in "The Big Trail" in 1930, and it had done poorly, and his starring days seemed to be over! In the mid-1930s, he successfully starred in a series of low budget B-westerns, but was not considered for major productions. But in 1939, when Gary Cooper turned down the lead in "Stagecoach", John Ford took a chance on John Wayne, but the studio thought so little of him that he wasn't pictured on the one-sheet or most of the advertising! We are currently auctioning this poster and a different 1960s Italian re-release one-panel (in a separate auction). There are very similar posters, locandinas, and photobustas, some of which are dated exactly 1960, and others which have a 1950 copyright in Roman numerals. Some have a studio of Colombus, some have United Artists, and most have no studio! So we are calling all these undated posters 1960s re-releases (and the ones dated 1960 as R1960), and we imagine they come from more than one re-release. It would also seem that that some of them might possibly date from before 1960, and we don't know for certain when the movie was first released Italy (the IMDb says it was released there in 1940, which is certainly possible). The poster had some scattered stains, and someone had overprinted the "COLUMBUS FILMS" area to the right of John Ford's credit at the bottom right (apparently this was done to most examples of this poster). The person who linenbacked the poster apparently decided the way to "restore" it was to put blobs of red paint over the areas of staining and you can see them scattered in the poster. They also painted over the "COLUMBUS FILMS" with brown paint. So this poster has very unusual defects, and please bear it all in mind and look closely at our super-sized image before bidding on it (we have no idea if all the old paint can be removed or not, so please assume that it probably can't, and would have to be painted over).
