An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 38 1/2" [70 x 98 cm]) (Learn More)

U.S. Marines: Active Service on Land and Sea, the circa 1916 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster ("Enlist at...") encouraging men to join the United States Marine Corps (USMC), and featuring Sidney Reisenberg art of a soldier holding a rifle while on patrol with a battleship in the background. Note that each poster had a blank area at the bottom so that a local enlistment site could be added. Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)!
Artist: Sidney Reisenberg

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had some creases and tears scattered throughout the image, with some tiny paper loss in part of the tears (if you look closely at our super-sized image, you can locate them). There were pinholes, tears, and tiny paper loss around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed in a somewhat "minimalist" fashion, with only slight restoration to the above defects. The poster displays nicely from any reasonable viewing distance, and I agree with the decision to back it in this fashion, because the defects are not very distracting or noticeable, and they more serve to demonstrate that this is a nearly 100 year-old poster (but of course, any talented restorer could perform additional restoration to this really cool poster, if the new owner desired, either with or without re-backing the poster).
