A Linenbacked Advertising Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 41 1/2" [70 x 105 cm]) (Learn More) Bulova is a timepiece manufacturing company that was founded in Switzerland in 1875 by Bohemian immigrant Joseph Bulova. The company soon began a standardized mass production new to watchmaking. Later, Bulova established New York operations in Woodside and Flushing, where it made innovations in watchmaking, and developed a number of watchmaking tools. The visual style of the company's advertising made its watches popular with the American public, and they produced the world's first television advertisement on July 1, 1941. Artist: Coles Phillips Important Added Info: Note that the artwork on this poster was created in 1922, when the Bulova company hired leading illustrator Coles Phillips to paint risque art of the Goddess of Time. The original painting was unveiled in 1922, and newspapers articles of the time mention that Bulova paid $3,000 to the artist, and when it was first displayed in New York, policeman where required to keep people from blocking the street while admiring it! Bulova adopted this image as a logo in the 1920s, and it also ran a number of ads in newspapers and magazines featuring this image. But we can find NO examples of this poster anywhere, although it would seem that it was surely created in the early 1920s, soon after the painting was unveiled. If anyone knows more about this (especially if they know of any other surviving examples of this poster), please e-mail us and we will post it here. Finally, note that because this poster has a great deal of restoration (see below), it will need to be sent in a very large flat package that measures approximately 30" x 45". Please bear this added expense in mind BEFORE placing a bid on this poster. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. This incredibly rare poster has an unusual history. It was found where it had been hanging for many decades (likely a painter's studio, because it had many paint drips scattered throughout), unprotected from the elements. Somewhere along the way, someone glued it to a canvas backing and stretched it over a wood frame, tacking it to the edges of the frame. A restorer was hired to first remove it from the canvas and then properly linenback it. In removing it, the paint stains were removed, but there were still many stains and tears scattered throughout. Because they did not want to completely repaint the poster, they mostly focused their efforts on the background areas, and looking at the image, you can clearly see the many, many defects scattered throughout the girl's image. Obviously, one would much prefer to find a better condition example of this poster, but we can't find that even one exists! The new owner will have the option of either displaying it as it is, or hiring a restorer to paint over the areas that can use it, and that will be entirely the choice of the new owner. Please do not bid on this poster unless you carefully look at our super-sized image, and also bear in mind that it will need to be sent in a very large flat package. Learn More about condition grades
