A Paperbacked Advertising Poster (measures 30 3/4" x 41" [78 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Old Gold: Cleopatra, the 1934 poster ("'The mildness and throat-ease of Old Golds won me' Claudette Colbert"; "Claudette Colbert in Cleopatra") advertising Old Gold brand cigarettes and featuring a sexy image of Claudette Colbert as the Egyptian ruler. Note that Old Gold cigarettes was a very popular brand in the 1930s, and they did many publicity tie-ins with top stars of the day. Their images would appear on large cardboard standees with taglines purportedly from the star recommending Old Golds, and they would be displayed in movie theater lobbies, and likely at stores selling the cigarettes. These advertising posters are extremely scarce! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had been mounted on a cardboard backing (this is how it was created). Someone removed it from the cardboard backing and backed it onto a thin paper backing, and they did some amateur restoration around the edges of the poster, where there were areas of paper loss and tears. There were creases, stains, and smudges scattered throughout the poster, and they did not attempt to perform restoration to those areas. In addition, the poster was roughly handled in the years since it was paperbacked, and it acquired additional creases and scuffs scattered throughout, with some water staining on the back of the right of the bottom border and on the back of the bottom of the right border. If I owned this poster, I would surely give it to a talented restorer and have them linenback it, and perform proper restoration. Afterwards, it would look great, but it will require substantial restoration, which will be costly, so bear that cost in mind before placing a bid on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
