A Folded Special Poster (measures 27 1/4" x 36 3/4" [69 x 93 cm]) (Learn More) Kokoon Artists Present Bal Risque, the 1934 poster promoting a costume ball which took place on Saturday, February 24th at the Allerton Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio. The Kokoon Arts Klub was a "Bohemian artists group" founded by Carl Moellmann and William Sommer, and known for it's "unconventional activities and espousal of 'new art'". Beginning in 1913, Kokooners held an annual "Bal Masque" which were wild and creative celebrations of bohemianism that featured costumes, exotic dances, provocative art, periodic nudity, chaotic processions, giant props and over-the-top decorations. Attendees' costumes had to adhere to the event's theme (such as Bal Dynamique, Bal Bizarre, or Bal Risque). Note that this poster features art of semi-nude revelers! The poster was apparently sent folded to people that were invited to attend, with a line at the bottom that says "YOU ARE INVITED", with a line after it where they would fill in the name of the guests, and the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned has "Mr. & Mrs. Harrison Kerr" filled in that area, and we would love to know more about the Kerrs! If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this wonderful poster (it is the one we refer to in our description above)! Also note that this item contains some nudity, so we have placed a white bar over those areas for those who are bothered by such images. Of course, the actual item does not have the white bars. Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: very good. As mentioned in our description above, the poster has the names of the people who this poster was given to written in the bottom border, and we don't consider this a defect! The poster has a faint diamond-shaped water stain surrounding the top crossfold. It also has some separation on parts of some folds. This is the sort of poster that responds really well to professional restoration. It is likely that much or all of the stain in the upper center of the image can be removed through chemical means (but, we would never consider restoring away the names of the people invited), after which the poster will look fantastic (although, since the stain is not that distracting, I think some collectors might choose to display this great poster on their wall just as it is). Either way, the new owner of this poster will have an extremely rare poster that will absolutely get the attention of all who view it! Learn More about condition grades
