Date Sold 6/11/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Photographic Negative (measures 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm]) (Learn More) Flesh and the Devil, the 1926 Clarence Brown silent romantic love triangle melodrama ("From the novel The Undying Past by Hermann Sudermann"; about a man who becomes obsessed with a woman after just catching a glimpse of her; he doesn't see her for years and when he does, he enrages her husband, who challenges him to a duel, and he kills the husband, and is sent away; while he is gone, his best friend watches after the widow, and when he returns, he discovers his best friend has married her; he still can't resist her, and his friend catches him with his wife, and they agree to have a duel, but while they are about to shoot, they realize the absurdity of it, and throw down their guns and embrace, but the wife, who was coming to stop them, dies on the way!) starring John Gilbert, Greta Garbo, Lars Hanson, Barbara Kent, and William Orlamond. Note that it seems amazing in the present day to realize that John Gilbert was billed above the title in this movie and that Greta Garbo received much inferior second billing (equal to that of third billed Lars Hanson), but of course, this was Greta Garbo's first year in the U.S., and her third American movie, and John Gilbert was a major established star, so he fully deserved his much better billing! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: James Montgomery Flagg Important Added Info: Note that this is a "studio-issued" negative created by MGM with India ink numbering at the bottom. What is a studio-issued negative? It was produced by the studio but is not the camera original. It is very high quality and was created in quantity by the studios and sent to media outlets or other places that had need of the very highest quality image for reproduction purposes (in newspapers, magazines, or elsewhere). We have put a scan of the negative that shows the "positive image" (in addition to a scan of the negative image). REMEMBER THAT WHAT YOU RECEIVE WILL BE A PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVE, NOT A POSITIVE IMAGE LIKE YOU ARE SEEING. However, we will provide the winning bidder of this auction that positive image scan that is both high quality and not watermarked (on request to the winning bidder, and only the winning bidder). The negative is in a plastic sleeve (but we removed it and scanned it, so that bidders could see just how high quality it is). It will be sent to the winner of the auction in its sleeve. Also, someone made a modern 8" x 10" positive print from the negative, and that will be included with the negative, but it is not what we pictured, because we wanted to show a positive scan created from the negative, and not the included positive print. Condition: good to very good. This was used for printing by MGM and has some dust, light scratches and other minor flaws that could easily be cleaned before printing or retouched after scanning. See our positive image for how great this looks! Learn More about condition grades
